Prince keeps bringing the hits, and it doesn’t seem as if he’s stopping anytime soon. The musical phenom is about to release a new album… but where?
If you’re familiar with the music industry, you know music projects tend to be a bit lengthy. For the most part, it’s due to administration and micromanaging. However, Prince Roger Nelson — better known as just “Prince” — has prepared his new album, HitNRun , in almost record time.
According to Rolling Stone , Prince quotes as follows.
“[The album] took about 90 days to prepare its release. If that’s what freedom feels like, HitNRun is what it sounds like.”
Yes, it appears that the musical superstar won’t be dropping the new album on Spotify, as he did his last album Art Official Age . This time, Prince’s album will be exclusive to Tidal’s streaming music service. According to the Daily Mail , Nelson plans to release his music via the platform next month.
“The mercurial 57-year-old has announced that his next album, HITNRUN: Phase One, will only be available on Tidal – which aims to provide artists with higher royalties. His latest ‘experimental’ album took 90 days to record ahead of its release on September 7th, with the Purple Rain singer citing a ‘non-restrictive arrangement’ as being the deal-breaker.”
Prince’s music has survived the test of time, and he feels that it should be well-appreciated by industry heads. This is where he says that Jay-Z caught his attention. Prince elaborated to Rolling Stone as follows.
“After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at Tidal recognize and applaud the effort that real musicians put into their craft to achieve the very best they can at this pivotal time in the music industry.
“Secondly, Tidal [has] honored us with a non-restrictive arrangement that once again allows us to continue making art in the fashion we’ve grown accustomed to and we’re extremely grateful for their generous support. And lastly, in the tech-savvy, real-time world we all live in today, everything is faster.”
Prince adds that it was only from that meeting and the idea of HitNRun that the album took just three months to complete.
Interestingly enough, the album is titled this way in honor of his unique gesture of Hit and Run concerts. If you’ve attended Prince concerts, you know that — sometimes — he doesn’t formally announce them. The day of the concert, you may just hear about it on a local radio station or see his tour bus parked in your town. From then, it’s just word-of-mouth. And that spreads like wildfire.
