Pregnant Anna Paquin Defends Her Bisexuality Comments, Says Orientation Isn’t ‘Made Up’

Anna Paquin, we were just thinking about you while reading the new Sookie book Deadlocked !

True Blood doesn’t return to the airwaves til the end of June, but we all got another glimpse into Sookie Stackhouse’s very busy brain (you know, due to the telepathy and all) as the latest installment of the books written by Charlaine Harris and on which the show was based hit shelves (and Kindles) earlier this week. Way to cliffhanger us, Charlaine!

Anyway, as you know, Harris’ Stackhouse is portrayed brilliantly by Anna Paquin. And the show – and to a degree, books- emerged as a champion for gay rights, somewhat of an allegory between the way vampires are treated in Harris’ universe with the way gay people are treated in our own.

Last year, Anna Paquin surprised many when she came out as bisexual, a far less common admission than the every so often “I’m gay” we hear from celebrities, and one that has earned her, by her own account, a bit of strife personally.

Paquin initially just appeared in a spot for the “Give a Damn” campaign, casually stating her bisexuality but not in a very big-deal way.

Now, Paquin explains a bit more, saying in a recent interview:

“For me, it’s not really an issue because I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing. It’s not made up. It’s not a… decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point. For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor to who they’re attracted to.”

Paquin also conceded that a few people may identify publicly as bisexual because it “feels less scary than making a statement that they’re gay,” but the actress feels that it’s important people know that bisexuality, like homosexuality, is not a choice.
