The biggest story of last week was — without a doubt — the supreme court making same-sex marriage a right nationwide , and since that news broke — like with everything else — there have been some people who are happy about it, and some people who are furious. But, the thing about America is, everybody has the right to their own opinion, including UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero.
Following his brutal knockout victory over Lyoto Machida at this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Florida, Yoel Romero made a controversial statement about the supreme court ruling, which forced the crowd that was cheering him into stunned silence. You can check Romero’s statement — which seemed to be him expressing his displeasure with the supreme court’s ruling, saying “Go for Jesus, not for gay Jesus” — right here .
Later, at the post-fight press-conference , Romero — who goes by the nickname “Soldier of God” and was seen wearing a “John 3:16” headband during his post-fight interview — apologized for his comments, saying that his statement was taken out of context.
“First of all, I would like to apologize — there was a misunderstanding. First of all, I’m a man of God and God is love. My expressions are always going to be about love. What I was trying to say was, ‘Look for the American Dream.’ There was a misunderstanding about gay marriage.”
There are some people who are faulting Romero’s broken-English, saying that it’s likely that he said, “Go for Jesus, not forget Jesus” instead of saying “Not for gay Jesus.”
One man — one of the UFC’s newest fighters, and former WWE wrestler CM Punk — believes that Romero did, in-fact say, “Gay Jesus,” and he lashed out at Romero on Twitter, and poked fun at his comments with a series of photos of himself from his time in WWE.

CM Punk’s tweets were more humorous than angry, as it’s clear that –from the statement he made later — Punk is an advocate for freedom-of-choice and freedom-of-speech.
“A moment to praise freedom-of-speech. We all have things we believe. We can all say them publicly, everyone has the right to make fun of us.”
Since the night of the fight, the backlash towards Romero has died down, and it’s likely that everyone will forget about whatever it was that he said by the time of his next fight, which will likely be against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, with the winner getting a shot at the UFC Middleweight Championship at some point next year.
