49-year-old Jamie Moyer and his debut with the Rockies was no doubt the main attraction of Saturday night’s game against the Astros, but it was ultimately Lucas Harrell that became the star of the show.
Moyer, who became the second-oldest starting pitcher in a major league game, gave away two homers to Jordan Schafer and J.D. Martinez. The entire Astros team was working to hit Moyer hard, but none of them had quite as much of an impact on Moyer as 26-year-old Harrell.
Harrell was able to carry the Astros to a 7-3 win, and put on an impressive show by pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing no runs on three hits with four strike outs in seven innings. Moyer, on the other hand, allowed five hits and three hits in five innings. While not an overwhelmingly dominant performance, Harrell no doubt put a dent in Moyer and the Rockies’ morale.
“It’s always good to get a lead early and put the pitcher under pressure,” Martinez said. “I’m glad we got him early, because we put pressure on him and we gave confidence to everybody.”
“I’m not a guy who’s going to strike out a lot of guys, and if I walk guys, that’ll get me in a lot of trouble,” Harrell added. “I felt like today, I was getting a lot of contact and getting a lot of ground balls was a key for me.”
