Adam Sandler has dominated the latest Razzies , the movie awards that recognize the year’s worst films.
What’s more, the 45-year-old actor has done it in style , with his alleged comedy Jack and Jill scooping a record TEN Razzies. How many awards are given out in the Razzies? Er, ten. Yes, Jack and Jill is the only movie in the 32-year history of the Razzies to win EVERY SINGLE PRIZE.
The movie clinched the uncoveted worst-picture award, while Sandler himself won for both worst actor and actress (for his dual roles in the film – he plays a pair of twins). As Razzies founder John Wilson noted, “He didn’t play triplets, but he couldn’t have won more awards if he had.”
Sandler also scored the Razzie for worst ensemble, worst screenplay (he was a co-writer on the movie), and worst screen couple (he played opposite Katie Holmes and OH MY GAWD Al Pacino).
Pacino won his first ever Razzie as worst supporting actor (he plays himself in the film), while David Spade, a good real-life friend of Sandler, got worst supporting actress for his own cross-dressing role in the film.
Jack and Jill Director Dennis Dugan was named worst director, and the cherry on the cake was the movie scooping worst remake, rip-off or sequel – Razzies voters saw it as a rip-off of Ed Wood’s Glen or Glenda? .
Sandler is still box office catnip, however. Most of his flicks top $100 million at the tills, and Jack and Jill came close to that, making $74 million. Wilson said:
“Adam Sandler has a pretty much basic attitude of, ‘No matter how dumb I make it, my fans are going to pay to see it.’ I guess it’s more about the complete lack of any genuine effort or concern or pride. An attitude of this is good enough, but when you consider what they’re charging for movie tickets today, it wasn’t good enough. It was good enough to get our attention. If you work with the attitude that you’re just going to be good enough, then you’re probably good enough for the Razzies.”
While some previous Razzie winners have shown up at the annual show to collect their awards in good humor, Sandler was absent from Sunday’s gala.
