A selection of Whitney Houston’s clothes and jewelry has fetched $80,000 at a Los Angeles auction, just seven weeks after the singer’s death. The Beverly Hills auction took place a few blocks from where the singer died by drowning in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton.
Five of Houston’s dresses and three ensembles were up for grabs at Julien’s “Hollywood Legends” auction. A bustier embellished with rhinestones and pearls went for $19,200, according to the auction house’s website, while a grey velvet gown Houston wore when she attended the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party with then-husband Bobby Brown in 1996 sold for $11,520.
Meanwhile, two pairs of earrings and a vest worn in her 1992 movie ‘ The Bodyguard ‘ were sold for a total of $8,500.
However, the ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer”s threads weren’t the most in-demand at the auction.
A coat worn by Clark Gable in ‘Gone With the Wind’ was also on the block, and fetched a cool $58,000 from a fan. The actor wore the jacket as Rhett Butler in the 1939 classic ‘ Gone With the Wind .’ The black and white wool herringbone garment included a hand-inscribed tag that read “Clark Gable” and “5-9-39.”
A Dior gown owned by Grace Kelly went for $72,000 , and Charlie Chaplin’s famous bowler hat brought in $57,600 . A metal-tipped bamboo cane owned by Chaplin, another trademark of the actor, was sold for $41,600 .
Chaplin gave these two items to a couple who helped to maintain his Swiss villa, according to the company.
