Doctors’ Day 2009: How It Began
Doctors’ Day 2009 is the 76th year the health-related holiday has been observed. On March 30, 1933, the Barrow County Alliance in Winder, Georgia decided to start the tradition. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, came up with the concept. The first Doctors’ Day was held on the same day as the first administering of anesthesia, according to the Southern Medical Association.
Two decades later, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution officially recognizing Doctors’ Day. In the fall of 1990, Congress passed legislation making March 30 a nationally recognized occasion.
