Drugs can make human beings do some crazy things. It doesn’t matter if a person is a user or a dealer. People will go to great lengths to get their fix. According to an ABC report, a Jamaican man was no exception. Where he had the drugs should serve notice to those who use. There is no telling where the drugs have been.
Romario Lewis got off a plane at New York’s Kennedy Airport displaying “numerous signs of nervousness” according to officers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. After noticing this, the officers conducted a physical search of the Jamaican-born citizen. It was during this search that two packages of a white powdery substance was discovered. Where it was discovered is the most alarming.
The substance, which was later identified as cocaine, a schedule II drug, was found inside the man’s underwear around his groin area. All in all, there was one pound of cocaine found, which considering where it was hid may have contributed to the suspicions of the officers. The street value of the drugs was around $19,000, according to recent statistics from the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Robert Perez, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Director of Field Operations for New York, had nothing but praise for his field officers.
“This seizure is another example of our CBP officers being ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of illicit drugs.”
Romario Lewis has since been turned over to the Homeland Security Investigations . He will be facing charges of smuggling drugs. According to the DEA, if he is convicted of the charges, he could face no less than five years in a federal prison, and the fine can be as much as $5 million.
This is not the only odd case of drugs or alcohol in the news recently. There were two different incidents this past weekend of people receiving citations for Driving Under the Influence. That is nothing unusual, but in both cases, the suspects were pulled over while driving their riding lawn mowers.
Trevor Bates, 27-years-old of Evansville, Indiana, was ticketed while riding his lawn mower. He did have passengers at the time as well, but somehow avoided a reckless endangerment charge. There was a 50-year-old woman standing on the deck of the mower and his daughter (age unknown) was sitting on his lap. His blood alcohol limit was 0.445, which is a little over five times the limit for those operating a motor vehicle.
The other incident occurred in Clay City, Kentucky. Billy Strange, no joke, was pulled over by officers for driving his lawn mower on the city streets. His blood alcohol content was about two times above the norm. That doesn’t matter to Clay City officer. They stressed a zero tolerance policy regardless of the vehicle.
It’s another week and another set of people going out there way just to show how dumb they really can be. It certainly makes you wonder if we need to revive Nancy Reagan’s “Say No To Drugs” campaign. Clearly, their are people out there who need it.
