A woman and baby were killed when a car crashed into their Northern California apartment complex on Saturday night. According to Fox News , the Livermore Police Department say the crash happened around 7 p.m. when the driver lost control of a vehicle by a curve in the road and hit the backside of an apartment complex on 975 Murrieta Boulevard. The woman, 40, and her 1-year-old baby were inside their apartment at the time of car crash and were killed instantly.

A 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl were injured and taken to the hospital; they’re in stable condition.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

The Contra Costa Times reports that the driver was a 35-year-old and he’s being charged with suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Ashton Nelson, 27, has lived at the apartment complex where the woman and baby were killed by the driver for seven years. She was outside when she heard a “really loud thunder-like noise.”

Nelson grabbed her 2-year-old daughter, went inside, and looked to see what had happened.

“All I saw was a bumper and debris in millions of pieces. It was like a horror movie to me,” Nelson said.

Following the horrific accident, there was a “jumble of terrifying sights and sounds,” she told the news source. A man she believes was the father was seen pounding on the ground in total devastation — and there was a little boy who was laying on the grass having difficulty breathing, she said. An ambulance transported him to the hospital.

Nelson saw the driver standing near the wrecked vehicle after the woman and baby were killed. He did admit to her that he’d been driving.

Nelson suffered cuts on her feet from the broken glass after running outside to see if she could help after the accident. She didn’t know her neighbors that well or talked with them much, but she said they would say hello or see them outside with their dogs and kids.

Anyone who may have been a witness to the car accident is asked to contact the Livermore Police Department at 925-371-4777.

Drunk driving accidents are attributed to a large number of deaths that occur on the nation’s roads. The Inquisitr has covered a great deal of these kinds of stories in the past. Unfortunately, drinking and driving don’t mix well on the road. A lot of drinkers think they can handle the road after having a few alcoholic drinks, but it’s a fatal gamble to take.
