German gaming website Gameswelt asked Treyarch a simple question in their preview coverage: Will Call of Duty Black Ops 3 run at 1080p on PS4 and Xbox One? The third game in the Black Ops series from developer Treyarch received its official reveal today, including PC specifications, which the Inquisitr has here . The title will be the first Call of Duty game to run on the current generation of consoles exclusively, leaving the decade-old Xbox 360 and only slightly younger PlayStation 3 behind. However, the hope of concentrating development on the more powerful hardware to achieve greater resolution and frame rate like 1080p on the PS4 and Xbox One may have crashed and burned today.

Mark Lamia, head of developer Teryarch, gave an interview to Gameswelt and towards the end, the outlet wondered if the development of the PC’s 4K resolution would take second seat to the console development. The following is as translated from Gameswelt.

“CEO Mark Lamia said that the PC is not to be put in second place, on the contrary. The 300 employees at Treyarch want to make the most of the strengths of the computer in order to give PC gamers the best possible gaming experience. But much work is still to be done, obviously, just like with the console versions. Standing firm, however, Lamia said the focus of the team is a frame rate of 60 frames per second. The PlayStation 4 currently does it with a resolution of 1080p. Regarding the Xbox One, Mark sidestepped the question a little by emphasizing that the final results are not clear yet. He reiterated, however, that the frame rate has the higher priority.”

The omission of the Xbox One frame rate is another hash mark in the Sony camp amongst gamers who love to count their resolution lines and use it thumb their noses as Xbox One loyalists. Very few subjects have galvanized the fan boy camps as much as the 1080p 60fps debate, while the dedicated PC gaming crowd chuckles to themselves as they will be able to surpass the PS4 and Xbox One when the game comes out with little effort. Putting aside the vehement voices for a moment, the absence of a solid resolution from Treyarch alludes to the continued trouble developers are having with the Xbox One architecture, especially amongst developers who are making games on multiple platforms.

At the end of the day, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be judged by its frame rate and gameplay by the series dedicated fan base rather than a true or dynamic 1080p resolution. The franchise has built a reputation on its silky smooth 60 frames per second since Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360. Treyarch is seen by many as the “A” team on the franchise now, and the resolution on the PS4 and Xbox One will showcase the best of what they have to offer fans with this new take on the franchise.
