Dr. Suess reigned at the box office for a second week in a row as the animated movie The Lorax managed to bring in another $39.1 million for a two week total of $125.4 million in U.S. box office take.

The Lorax features the vocal performances of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms and Betty White. During it’s first week of release the movie far exceeded analysts expectations when it took in more than $70 million domestically.

Falling short of the animated movies total was the Taylor Kitsch led movie John Carter which debuted in second place with $30.6 million. John Carter tells the story of a 19th century solider turned Martian hero.

With a production cost of $250 million John Carter is one of the most expensive movies ever made which makes its second place finishing a less than stellar placement for the movie which has been touted in ads as the “first blockbusters of 2012.”

According to MSNBC the following movies rounded out the weekends top 10 box office:

“Eddie Murphy’s “A Thousand Words” (No. 6, $6.4 million), Ryan Reynolds’ “Safe House” (No. 7, $5 million), Channing Tatum’s “The Vow” (No. 8, $4 million), JoshHutcherson’s “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (No. 9, $3.8 million) and Reese Witherspoon’s “This Means War” (No. 10, $3.6 million).”

Do you think John Carter will end up earning a profit or did studio executives gamble too much on a movie that can’t even compete with the second weekend release of a children’s cartoon?
