Bill Murray will absolutely not be taking part in a Ghostbusters 3 movie, while we have speculated over the last year about the funnyman’s involvement in the new movie Dan Aykroyd finally came out on Wednesday and in no uncertain terms said Murray is flat out refusing a role in the project.
Aykroyd told the Telegraph :
“At this point [the movie is] in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved. He’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him.”
There is still hope for a third movie however Dan says he wants to stay true to the original two movies and he admits that he’s “not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise.”
With that being said Aykroyd has mentioned that he would consider recasting Murray’s role which in this writers opinion is probably the worst possible decision that could be made. Last year Murray said if he came back he would like his character to be a ghost instead of a still living, breathing member of the Ghostbusters team.
I think it’s time to face it and realize that without Bill Murray the Ghostbuster’s franchise is as good as dead. If a new movie does come about it needs to be a retelling, not a continuation of the same story and let’s face it without Bill Murray Ghostbuster’s wouldn’t have been what it was and still is…hilarious.
