Britney Spears is doing very well with her Las Vegas residency right now and is preparing to release new music. Although a new album isn’t exactly a priority, Spears has recorded a duet with controversial rap artist Iggy Azalea. The Daily Mail recently quoted Azalea on the duet with Britney Spears.
“We have a song, which is going to be her first single. She said she would like to work with me in an interview and they reached out. We recorded a few different things and then one of those just ended up being, I think, undeniably great.”
Britney Spears recently talked to Billboard about the man in her life, Charlie Ebersol , and how she loves when he visits her during her Vegas residency.
“Oh, he loves it. He comes every weekend, even though he’s flying all over the place… It’s always really nice when he comes. The kids love to see him. It’s great. I feel like our passion for life is pretty much on the same page.”
Britney Spears also revealed to Billboard that “Toxic” is her favorite song during her performance. She said she loves getting rained on during the performance since it wakes her up. She notes that 90-minute sets three nights a week can be really tough.
Britney’s new good-girl image may be threatened a little bit by singing with the endlessly controversial Iggy Azalea. She, unlike Eminem, has been accused of “cultural appropriation,” and some say she is ripping off the African-American community. Stephanie Convery of the Guardian has defended her.
“They denounce her lyrics, alleged racist tweets and her ‘mimicry of sonic blackness.’ They also argue that she displays, at best, an uncomfortable ignorance about the complexities of race issues. But what she represents is more complex than a white girl who doesn’t think before she speaks: actually, she is the inevitable product of neoliberal capitalism, and in some ways she is much a victim of it as a culprit.”
It’s important to note that Britney Spears has also been accused of cultural appropriation before. However, at Britney Spears’ peak, the concept of “cultural appropriation” wasn’t a big deal. “ (I Got That) Boom Boom ” caused a minor stir back in 2003 before the social justice warriors took over Twitter. Janet Jackson fans have also accused Britney Spears of ripping off her style.
There is no exact release date for Britney Spears’ duet with Iggy Azalea, but let’s hope it’s soon. When Britney Spears is in a duet, the results are usually top-notch.
