Teacher’s Note Scolds Doctor Over Daughter’s ‘Unhealthy’ Packed Lunch At School

Would you believe that a teacher’s note scolded a doctor over his daughter’s lunch being “unhealthy”?

As ABC 3 reports, it was a substitute teacher who wrote a gutsy note and sent it home with one of the students. Dr. Justin Puckett was offended by the letter – not because of what it said, but for insinuating he wasn’t doing his job as a parent. When Dr. Puckett and his wife received the note sent home with their daughter Tuesday afternoon, they were astounded at the tone of it.

The teacher’s note to the student’s parents is a bold move when you consider the teacher knows that the father is in the medical profession.

“Dr. and Mrs. Puckett,

“The cafeteria reported to me that Alia’s lunch today included four chocolate bars, a bag of marshmallows, Ritz crackers and a pickle. Please see that she packs a proper lunch tomorrow.”

“Parent signature requested”

The Pucketts responded on the note by writing back, “Request declined.”

Dr. Puckett explains that the note sent home with his daughter didn’t accurately describe what was actually inside his daughter’s lunch. He reveals to ABC 3 that his daughter had four pieces of ham for protein, some pickles as a vegetable, four marshmallows in a ziplock bag, and three “very small pieces” of chocolate; she only ate one piece of chocolate.

“There were no crackers. Sure, I’d liked her to pack a few more veggies and maybe a piece of fruit, but we compromise on pickles occasionally,” Puckett said.

This teacher’s note didn’t go over too well due to its nature. Puckett realizes the importance of parenting and making sure kids eat healthy. He had a lot to say on his Facebook page about the note, which can be read here in its entirety. He takes his job as a parent seriously.

“I’m responsible for them and for the choices that they make and do whether it’s at school or not.

“I have the ultimate responsibility to raise my children and I take that role very, very seriously and so maybe I took it bit more personally that there was some offense that maybe I wasn’t doing a good job in that duty, something that is my number one job.”

Kirksville Primary School issued an apology over the teacher’s note to the doctor.

“We have as educators been directed to provide healthy and nutritious foods for so long that we had an individual take it upon themselves to send a note home to parents.

“This will not happen again and I am sorry for any inconvenience.”

Was the teacher being too meddlesome with a student by sending her home with a note to her parents? Dr. Justin Puckett is a family doctor who likely emphasizes the benefits of eating healthy to his children. The teacher’s note is circulating the internet and drawing a large response.
