Kevin Hart has been vocal in his acceptance of those with alternative lifestyles. However, in a recent interview, he admitted that he would never play a gay character in a movie or television show. In fact, Hart admits turning down a role in the 2008 film Tropic Thunder because the character was a “flagrant” homosexual.

Last week, Hart appeared on the Power 105.1’s Breakfast Club radio show. While discussing his latest film, The Wedding Ringer , Hart explained why he turned down the role in Tropic Thunder .

“I can’t [play a gay man] because I don’t think I’m really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of the insecurities about myself trying to play that part.”

As reported by Huffington Post , the comedian further explained that he is concerned about “what people are going to think” if he accepts a homosexual role . Kevin Hart said his doubts and insecurities would make it impossible to portray the character “the way [he is] supposed to.”

Although he admits it is unlikely, Kevin Hart did not discount the possibility of changing his mind and playing a gay character sometime in the future. He also stressed the fact that he has the utmost respect for the gay community.

Indeed, Hart has shown compassion toward those with alternative lifestyles. While hosting the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, Hart commended R&B singer Frank Ocean’s decision to open up about his homosexuality.

Kevin Hart has also refused include references to homosexuality in his stand-up comedy routine. As reported by E! Online, Hart discussed his decision in the April 2013 issue of Ebony magazine.

“The repercussions for saying certain words are harsh… I can understand how people could be affected by certain words and slurs. I get it. My way of showing respect is to not play around with it, not mention it, not joke with it at all. I understand how serious it is.”

As discussed in a 2014 Reddit AMA, Hart previously included homosexuality in his comedy act. User cadenhead asked the comedian what prompted him to revise his routine .

Hart replied that homosexuality is “a sensitive topic.” As he has “respect [for] people of all orientations,” he felt the topic was “just best left alone.”

Kevin Hart’s refusal to accept a homosexual role may seem contrary to his previous behavior. However, Hart suggests his decision has more to do with his lack of experience as an actor than his feelings toward homosexuals in general.
