The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and the entire AMC network itself has kept pretty mum on their highly anticipated spin-off of the show. Dubbed Cobalt by the fans, the details behind the new series have been so scarce, the cast itself was only confirmed a few weeks back.
But with shooting set to begin, Robert Kirkman has decided to finally open up on what fans can expect, calling the new Walking Dead spinoff “startlingly different” than its predecessor. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Kirkman also sets the record straight on the many rumors surrounding the show – including where it takes place.
“It’s Los Angeles,” Kirkman confirms. “It’s a corner of the world that we have never explored in the comic book series. So, theoretically, something like this could be happening in Los Angeles in the comic book series, but we don’t show you this area of the country in the comic book series. So it fits within that world, but it is all new characters, all new events and all kinds of crazy stuff.”
Robert makes a point to ensure that both fans of the current Walking Dead series and non-fans alike can watch the spinoff without having to know it’s robust history.
“We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own. You could watch ‘The Walking Dead’ spinoff if you’ve never watched an episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that’s what we’ve accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I’m really excited.”
Fans have been chomping at the bit for months now to uncover the details of Cobalt . ComicBook.com first broke details surrounding the new characters that include Sean Cabrera, a Latino male in his early 40s trying to do right by everyone in his life played by Cliff Curtis, and guidance counselor Nancy Tompkins who will be portrayed by Kim Dickens, according to Variety .
There’s so much hype surrounding the series that many have even speculated that a comic book companion may soon be published as well, as reported by Inquisitr .
Either way, expect the new Walking Dead series to be different in many kinds of ways.
“It’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in ‘The Walking Dead’ thus far… I think the look and feel of ‘The Walking Dead’ spinoff is going to be startlingly different.”
