A horrific accident in Wye Mills, Maryland, has left at least five people dead, reports the Houston Chronicle . According to the report, Maryland State Police have confirmed the deaths of five people — all believed to be members of the same family. The dead also included a pregnant woman and a two-month-old child.
According to USA Today , the accident happened at an intersection near Chesapeake College, located in Maryland’s Queen Anne’s County at around 1:15 a.m. on Saturday. Reports say that the accident happened when the car the family was traveling in collided with a tractor-trailer. The actual circumstances in which the accident took place are still being investigated. Initial reports, however, say that the tractor-trailer rolled over the car before coming to rest.
Police officials from Maryland have, in the meantime, confirmed the identities of all the people traveling in the car at the time of the accident. They have been identified as 24-year-old Regina Ayres of Greenbush, Virginia; her 7-year-old daughter, Jordan Ayres; her 2-month-old son, Jonathan Ayres; her 25-year-old boyfriend, Travis Straton of Onancock, Virginia; and Regina Ayers’ 30-year-old sister, Zarissa Ayers, and her unborn child. All the passengers were residents of Accomack County, Virginia, officials have confirmed.
Maryland State Police have also confirmed that the driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured in the accident. She has been identified as 28-year-old Yvenet Mayette, 28, a resident of Wilmington, Delaware. The family was travelling in a 2006-make Suzuki Forenza. An aerial photo captured by a NBC4 Washington camera crew clearly shows the tractor-trailer lying overturned at the accident spot.
It is unclear at this stage if the driver of the tractor-trailer would be charged for causing this mishap. Investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the cause of the crash.
