Nearly 15 years after the release of cult classic Wet Hot American Summer , filming has begun on a follow-up series, set to be released through Netflix.

Virtually the entire original cast of Wet Hot American Summer is returning for the new production, according to Deadline . Though plot details were not immediately available, it was revealed that David Wain will direct the eight episode limited series. Wain will also executive produce the series alongside Michael Showalter, with whom he wrote the original film.

Netflix confirmed the news via Twitter, just days after the company’s Ted Sarandos spoke about the possible return of Wet Hot American Summer at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, according to the Hollywood Reporter .

“We’re really excited about the proposition about getting the show back together,” he said at the time. “More to come.”

Wet Hot American Summer , released in 2001, depicted the final day of a fictional 1980s summer camp. Starring Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, and Amy Poehler, among others, the comedy fared poorly at the box office, but went on to become a cult classic. Its return has been rumored for some time, as the Inquisitr previously reported, amid the success of Arrested Development’s much publicized revival on Netflix.

During a 2012 interview with Geeking Out with Kerri Doherty , Showalter first addressed his plans to develop a follow-up to Wet Hot American Summer . Though he revealed some details of the project at the time, it is unclear if those facts apply to the Netflix series.

“We are working on a prequel,” he noted. “It’s six months to a year earlier than when the original movie was – except the actors playing those characters are 10 years older.”
