The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies is a juggernaut that simply cannot be beat. The third and final installation of The Hobbit series has won the box office battle for the third straight week. The win is especially impressive considering there were some who thought The Hobbit would finally meet its match this weekend.

Perhaps more impressive than the three week run of The Hobbit is just how much money the film is raking in. By being projected to take in more than $21 million this weekend the number would drive The Hobbit ‘s total domestic total to more than $220.8 million according to Fox News . In order to keep its crown, The Hobbit had to beat off two Christmas holdovers that were expected to make a real charge towards the top of the box office charts.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies ended up outpacing both Into the Woods and Unbroken . Unbroken , especially was expected to have a showing that could topple the Middle Earth tale. It turns out that even Angelina Jolie directing a film couldn’t knock off what has been the eighth highest grossing film of 2014, despite only being in theaters for the final 16 days of the year.

The Hobbit is also earning plenty of money across the pond. According to Variety , the final installation of what some could say has now been a six episode movie series had brought in more than $450 million by last Thursday. That number is also still doing quite well despite the film not being available in China yet.

While Unbroken and Into the Woods were considered the real contenders but it was a surprise showing by The Woman in Black 2 that actually took the runner up spot in the box office rankings on Friday. Updated numbers said the movie did indeed fade, but considering this is a sequel to a film that wasn’t exactly commercially huge the first time around, winning the second spot for any day is something to be noted.

Over the course of the weekend, Unbroken actually made a bit of a charge and it appears it will finish second only to Bilbo Baggins, Galdalf and the rest of the Middle Earth crew. The real question now is just how much of a juggernaut the Peter Jackson flick can be. Next weekend isn’t expected to be a big weekend for new films, so The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies could actually get a fourth week in first place.
