Madonna is in hot water over a number controversial tweets she posted in reference to the late civil rights activists Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter’s latest album, Rebel Heart, is scheduled to be released in March.
So, it’s not surprising that she took to Twitter to promote the upcoming release of the highly anticipated album. However, her approach may not have been the most effective way. As a matter of fact, it’s probably safe to say she definitely ruffled the feathers of an overwhelming number of fans. According to Billboard , the three pictures of the notable figures were altered to reflect the look of her Rebel Hearts album cover.
The first “rebel heart” she shared a picture of was Bob Marley. For most fans, the Jamaican reggae singer-songwriter definitely fit the bill of a “rebel,” whose music has impacted listeners for decades. Since the late legendary musician is also an entertainer, Madonna’s post didn’t spark much of a debate. However, when she posted the next pictures of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela, the responses took an abrupt turn.

Although the 56-year-0ld singer may have only tweeted the photos of the men she considers “rebel hearts” like herself, fans definitely weren’t pleased by the seemingly offensive message. She probably meant to shed light upon the promotion of love, peace, and equality but unfortunately many Twitter fans didn’t see it that way. So of course, they had no reservations about expressing their displeasure. Many agreed that the tweets were highly disrespectful. Needless to say, some of the tweets were quite brash.
