Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne Dewitt was arrested early Sunday morning by the South Carolina Highway Patrol on charges he was driving under the influence. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries, as reported by ABC News 4.

According to Count On 2 , troopers were called out to the scene of a hit and run collision on Sunday, December 28 at 5:50 a.m. at the intersection of Red Bank Road and Henry Brown Road in Berkeley County.

A Ford truck rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection in which the driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries that have not yet been made public. The driver of the Ford truck fled the scene.

Troopers were able to locate a Ford truck at a traffic stop in Hanahan, South Carolina in which Sheriff Wayne DeWitt was the driver.

Once the troopers were able to determine that DeWitt was the driver of the truck involved in the accident, they administered a field sobriety test. It was at that time Sheriff DeWitt failed the sobriety test, and it was discovered he was driving under the influence.

ABC News 4 reports that Sheriff DeWitt was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center where he refused to take a Breathalyzer test. DeWitt was subsequently charged with a DUI , and with leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury.

Sixty-three-year-old DeWitt, who has served at Berkeley County Sheriff since 1994, is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center until he is sent back to Berkeley County for bond court. That hearing has not been set.
