Want free makeup? Today’s your day. Thanks to a class-action settlement, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillard’s, and other stores are handing out millions of dollars in free cosmetics — and all you have to do is show up and ask.

Free Makeup Settlement

The free makeup comes from a 2004 lawsuit over unfair pricing on department store cosmetics. Stores and manufacturers were accused of fixing prices in violation of antitrust laws. The companies agreed to give away $175 million in free makeup to consumers to settle the complaints.

Free Cosmetics: Which Stores Are Included

The following stores are participating in the free makeup settlement:

• Bergdorf Goodman • Bergner’s • Bloomingdale’s • Boston Store • Carson Pirie Scott • Dillard’s • Gottschalks • Herberger’s • Macy’s • Neiman Marcus • Nordstrom • Parisian • Saks Fifth Avenue • Younkers

How the Makeup Giveaways Work

The makeup giveaways are limited to specific products, a full list of which can be found here . The items available at Macy’s stores include products from Estée Lauder, Clinique, Lancôme, Clarins, Guerlain, Givenchy, Chanel, Boucheron, Coty, Calvin Klein, L’Oréal, and Christian Dior. The items at Bloomingdale’s stores include Estée Lauder, Clinique, Lancôme, Clarins, Guerlain, Chanel, Boucheron, L’Oréal, and Christian Dior.

Only one free makeup sample will be given to each person at each store. Technically, the free cosmetics are limited to people who bought the products at the stores between May of 1994 and July of 2003; however, you don’t actually have to present a receipt or any form of purchase proof. All you have to do is sign a form stating that you did buy one of the products within the aforementioned timeframe.

The giveaway will last for seven days starting today (January 20) — but the free makeup will also be limited based on store supply, and no rainchecks will be given out.
