The 18-year-old son of former Bears and Chargers quarterback Erik Kramer (above right) has passed away in his sleep from suspected alcohol poisoning. Griffen Kramer (above left) was found dead at his friend’s house in Agoura Hills, Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

Police say Kramer, back-up quarterback for the Thousand Oaks High School football in California, had attended a party with a friend the night before his death. His family confirmed that alcohol poisoning may have caused his death.

The school’s headteacher Lou Lichtl told the Ventura County Star:

“He reportedly went to sleep and did not wake up. Although the cause of death isn’t official, initial indications suggest his passing was due to alcohol poisoning. Obviously, there’s a real sense of sadness on campus. There was a wonderful spirit about him, and he’s really going to be missed.”

The teenager had previously admitted that he had struggled with substance abuse, but said his commitment to football had helped him combat his addiction.

Sporting prowess ran in the family: his father Erik led the Detroit Lions to the 1991 NFC championship, and was starting quarterback for the Bears from 1994-96. The Chicago Bears tweeted their condolences on Wednesday:

“Very, very sad news: Ex Bears QB Erik Kramer’s 18-year-old son, Griffen, passed away Sunday. Our thoughts & prayers are with u, Erik.”

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said the cause of death was unclear, but that there was no evidence of foul play.

Griffen is survived by his father Erik, his mother Marshawn and 13-year-old brother, Dillon. Our thoughts go out to his family.
