With the future of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise embroiled in speculation, Marvel fans have begun to wonder whether rumored plans may allow the Civil War storyline to play out across the Marvel cinematic universe.

According to HitFix , the behind-the-scenes efforts at Marvel seem to be focused on further expanding their hugely successful cinematic universe. This may include gaining access from Sony to one of the very characters whose absence would stand in the way of a Civil War movie.

“Whatever Marvel’s future is, the Fox deal remains a thorn in their side, a sequester of some of their biggest characters that looks unlikely to ever change,” wrote HitFix ‘s Drew McWeeny.

“Sony, on the other hand, may be doing things the opposite way. While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool ‘Spider-Man’ plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds. Will it work out? I don’t know. I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.”

As Moviepilot notes, the idea of a “Civil War” movie remains speculation until Marvel or Sony reveal their plans. The fact that the rights to Spider-Man rest with Sony, however, is widely seen as the biggest impediment by far to producing Civil War .

While Spidey’s role in Civil War could certainly be assigned to another character (much to the inevitable chagrin of some hardcore fans), Marvel and Sony already enjoy a healthy working relationship. As The Inquisitr has previously noted, Sony was a key player in bringing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to the screen, potentially laying the groundwork for a deal that could make Civil War a silver screen reality.

As Artsbeat notes, Sony agreed in 2011 to a $278 million deal that saw many of Spider-Man’s merchandising rights transferred to Marvel. Among many passionate fans, this fact contributes to the belief that Civil War may be the long term plan for Marvel’s cinematic universe.
