Mikey Welsh, 40, the former bassist for rock group Weezer was found dead on Saturday afternoon in his Chicago hotel room.
Welsh who was reportedly in town to watch his former band play a show was discovered unresponsive in his hotel room after he failed to meet his 1pm checkout time.
Weezer’s current bassist Scott Shriner tweeted after his death
“Really bummed about Mikey. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Such a talent… he made a special mark on the world with his art.”
Welsh’s former band released the following statement on their website:
“As many of you may have heard, Mikey Welsh has passed away,” while adding, “Understanding that many here are grieving, Weezerpedia has created a digital eulogy page for Mikey Welsh where fans can post stories, pictures, or thoughts. R.I.P. Mikey.”
Police believe his death was caused by a drug overdose.
