It’s been three months since Caroline Wozniacki’s fiancé, pro golfer Rory McIlroy, suddenly broke up with her over the phone. The call, which Wozniacki thought was a joke at first, seemed like the most shameless way of ending a three year relationship. Didn’t Caroline deserve a face-to-face? Nevertheless, the tennis champion has been nothing but classy, so she can be forgiven for some subtle burns against McIlroy. First and foremost was the jab at the golfer’s height. During an interview with Graham Bensinger, Wozniacki had this to say.
“I would like a taller guy so I can wear high heels. I look for someone who is honest, fun to be around and doesn’t take himself too seriously.”
McIlroy stands at 5 foot 8 inches (about 173 cm) tall, and Caroline is about 5 foot 10 inches. Any potential future boyfriends will have to keep this in mind. The comments also seem to indicate that the golfer was not the most honest character, and was perhaps a little arrogant in the relationship.
The interview broached a very difficult subject: the break-up. Caroline Wozniacki describes the call as abrupt and shocking.
“I was shocked. I thought at least it would be face to face or something but there was nothing. It was a phone call and I didn’t hear from him again.”
Wozniacki and McIlroy are both public figures, making the breakup that much more difficult.
“It was very hard because he made it very public from the start. He put out a press release and all of that so it just got put in my face.”
For his part McIlroy said at the time , “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”
Despite all the adversity of this year, 24-year-old Caroline Wozniacki still has a lot to be thankful for.
The magazine People with Money named her one of the top ten highest paid tennis players in the world, with a total earnings of about $58 million a year . In 2012, Wazniacki’s career look as though it may be winding down, yet it’s clear she’ll be hitting the court for some time to come.
At the U.S. Open , Wozniacki seeded 10th, losing to long-time close friend Serena Williams. After the match, Williams promised to buy Caroline a drink. Serena was reportedly there for Caroline Wozniacki during the entire brutal break-up, as good friends should.
