There truly is a card for every occasion. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, showing your mom you care on Mother’s Day, or you know, standing in the unemployment line, Hallmark has the card for you. With the unemployment rate hovering at around 9%, Hallmark has just rolled out a line of unemployment sympathy cards.
WLBZ reports that several stores now have a section for job loss and recession humor for the new Hallmark unemployment sympathy cards. And with close to 14 million people out of work, that aisle is probably getting a lot of action.
Hallmark Creative Director Derek McCracken, told NPR :
“People in times of need will always need to connect. Consumers have asked us for a way to connect in those difficult situations, we try to respond in an authentic way and we think that’s what the greeting card does.”
Hallmark says that the cards are selling very well, which for everyone not working at Hallmark (or anywhere else), is a little depressing. The United States Postal Service could soon lay off 120,000 employees, Bank of America is expecting to slash 4000 jobs, and a new US Census Study showed that 1 in 6 Americans were living in Poverty. Oh, and there’s also the unemployed guy that is letting people hunt him for $10,000 a shot.
