Indie pop star Lana Del Rey was recently interviewed by Fashion magazine on the inspiration behind her lyrics and where she finds her confidence . Del Rey, who seems to brand herself as a melancholy artist who occasionally struggles with depression, claims that fan interactions are what lifts her spirits.

“Lately, I’ve sought comfort in one-on-one interactions with people backstage after the shows—spending hours with fans afterwards and drawing energy from that well,” said Lana Del Rey. “People liking what I’m doing on stage is a big ‘f*** you’ to whoever doubted me in the first place.”

It might seem strange that Lana Del Rey would need confidence, since her popularity seems to be on the rise. Especially after Del Rey’s recent release of her new album Ultraviolence, fans would expect that it must be pretty good to be Lana Del Rey. But Del Rey describes herself as a “dark character,” which inevitably shines through in her enigmatic lyrics. After making the controversial remark to The Guardian, “I wish I was dead already,” Lana Del Rey then had to clarify her meaning to Rolling Stone , saying, “I find that most people I meet figure I kind of want to kill myself anyway. So, it comes up every time.” When Lana was asked about the lyrics on Ultraviolence inspired by Barrie-James O’Neill, Del Rey replied:

“I’m a dark character and he very is an even darker character than I am. Trying to get some consistency and some normality within the dynamic of that relationship has been impossible. Songs like ‘Shades of Cool’ came out all that.”

The September issue of Fashion magazine featuring Lana Del Rey hits the stands on August 11.

Just Jared also reported on Lana Del Rey’s source of confidence and shared a gallery of Lana herself looking comfortable in a casual t-shirt and jeans . You can see some of the pictures of Lana below, courtesy of AKM Images and Just Jared .
