Washington County deputies have arrested a 46-year-old man accused of burglary after he fell from a tree atop which he had climbed up in an attempt to escape, reports Oregon Live . The accused, Bret T. Davis, had climbed up the tree and remained there for over 30 minutes as policemen asked him to come down. Eventually, Davis fell to the ground as he made an attempt to climb up a higher branch of the tree. The 40-foot fall did injure Davis, though none of the injuries were life threatening.

Before Davis climbed up the tree, he was caught breaking into a home at Southwest Pheasant Drive near 185th Avenue. According to county sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Vance Stimler, they received a call at around 2:40 pm from a male house owner who said that he had spotted an intruder in his home. The home owner said he had fought with the intruder, who eventually managed to escape. Soon, deputies armed with a police dog arrived at the home in order to investigate. They eventually managed to track down the alleged burglar, who had by the time climbed up a tree in order to escape being caught. The tree was along Pheasant drive, barely a mile away from where Davis had stolen a few bottles of alcohol, some clothes, and sports drinks. It is believed that he consumed some alcohol while he was on the tree top.

Meanwhile, officers who had assembled below the tree asked Davis to come down — but he did not budge. Instead, he kept climbing higher and higher. And then, the expected happened. Without warning, Davis came crashing down the tree, which is a good 40 feet tall. The officers arrested him immediately and he was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. Davis did suffer minor injuries, some of which were inflicted during the fight with the home owner.

According to USA Today , Davis was charged on counts of first-degree burglary, third-degree robbery, fourth-degree assault, and second-degree theft. He is currently lodged in the Washington County Jail.

We have heard of stupid criminals in the past as well — but this one is simply plain weird. Why would someone climb up a tree to “escape” from the police?
