The Pete Holmes Show was cancelled this past Friday by TBS. Executive-produced by Conan O’Brien, the late-night comedy show featured stand-up comedian Pete Holmes interviewing celebs and performing extraordinarily odd, but laugh-out-loud funny sketches. Unfortunately, TBS felt it didn’t pique enough attention to warrant its continuation, reports Entertainment Weekly :
“We recognize Pete as one of the most relevant comedians working today. We loved the show and gave it two chances, we just couldn’t draw the audience needed to justify a third round. We hope we’ll get to work with him again.”
According to The Wire , while the 70-episode strong Pete Holmes Show garnered quite a bit of attention (not to mention quite a few followers), it continually failed to beat out other 12:00 am competitors like the Comedy Central improv show Midnight. Ironically, the previous show in this time slot, Lopez Tonight, was cancelled for pretty much the exact same reason. It had fans, but just not enough or so TBS argued. The crazy thing is that the network has yet to even decide on a replacement.
Regardless, Holmes originally got the gig (which first aired in October 2013) after making a few appearances on Conan O’Brien’s talk show. Conan liked his “goofy, inquisitive brand of humor.” He also appreciated Pete’s podcast series You Made It Weird, in which Pete discusses topics like religion and sex with everybody from other comedians to filmmakers, authors and even pastors.
The show always started with a monologue-esque stand-up bit from Holmes, after which it was followed by hilarious sketch comedy clips and interviews with celebs like Adam Pally, Ben Schwartz, Patton Oswalt and Jenny Slate, to name a few. And unlike in other talk shows, the celeb interviews were very genuine. Holmes picked people he knew, and thus, the conversations were neither staged nor dull.
Holmes is taking it all with stride, despite having his coveted show cancelled. He penned a rather lengthy Facebook status update in which he expressed his gratitude to the show’s crew, the show’s producers, and of course, the show’s ardent fans:
“THANK YOU FOR WATCHING! The response from the fans was incredible. Thank you a billion.”
The good news is that the show still has a few more episodes left to air. It won’t officially end until its June 19 broadcasting, so enjoy it while you can still can!
