Denzel Washington is back to kick butt in the movies, yet again, in the first trailer (via IndieWire ) for The Equalizer , based on the 1980s CBS drama of the same name. Denzel plays Robert McCall, a former government operative who has faked his own death in order to retire to a quiet life working in a retail store. Washington’s McCall is forced back into his old life when he comes to the aid of a young girl (Chloe Moretz) he meets one night.
Washington didn’t really watch the original series but was drawn to the project for other reasons. “The title doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s the material,” Washington told USA Today . “It’s a classic story, the innocent girl and the guy coming in to save the day and kick some butt. You’ll get some popcorn and escape for a couple of hours.”
Denzel also jumped at the chance to work with director Antoine Fuqua, who directed Training Day, the film that earned Washington his Best Actor Oscar.

“In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.”
The Equalizer hits theaters on September 26, 2014. It will be Denzel Washington’s only film released in 2014.
