14-Pound Baby, Born In Massachusetts, Is Largest In More Than 10-Years

Surprise! A healthy 14-pound healthy baby girl is the largest born at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in over a decade, according to reports from WCVB .

Carissa Ruscak shocked everyone, including her mom and dad when she was weighed at 14-and-a-half pounds immediately after birth.

It wasn’t really that much of a surprise for the parents and doctors, as baby Carissa’s big sister weighed 10-pounds at birth and they were somewhat expecting to have a big baby, maybe not a 14-pound one, but nonetheless, Caroline said she suspected baby was big.

“I heard the weight, and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” the 14-pound baby’s mother, Caroline Ruscak told WCVB . “It validated me, because I was in a lot of pain when I was pregnant. So to hear the size, it made sense.”

“We expected her to have a big baby. Her first baby was 10-and-a-half-pounds, so we weren’t surprised,” Dr. Jennifer Kickham — who delivered the baby via C-section — told WCVB . “We were expecting a big baby, but we weren’t expecting one quite that big.”

Even though the proud papa, Brian, knows he will have his hands full when his two girls get older, he couldn’t be happier to welcome his new baby, 14-pounds and all:

“Big and beautiful: Claudia and Carisa. I’ll be in trouble in a few years, but that’s OK, I feel very lucky.”

“When she came out at 14-and-a half-pounds, I couldn’t believe it. I took a picture of the scale just to document it because I couldn’t believe how big she was. And long, too: 22 inches is long. That’s what we like, long and big. That’s what I am.”

As her pregnancy progressed, Caroline kept getting questions, from friends and strangers asking her if she was carrying twins, which — as any pregnant woman knows — can be very irritating, especially when she knows it is not the case.

“Three weeks before the scheduled C-section, they were estimating that she was 11.5 pounds.” Rusack said and when Carissa was born at 14-and-a-half-pounds everyone was saying, “We need to check the records; this could be the biggest baby we’ve ever seen here.”

Actually, another baby born at Mass General, was exactly the same 14-pounds, an exact tie. Mom and baby are said to be at home getting used to each other and recovering from the pregnancy.
