New York Jets rumors are heating up as free agency nears with a major change at quarterback looming.
Free agency starts Tuesday at 4 pm ET, and many think the Jets will be one of the biggest players. After an up-and-down campaign from rookie Geno Smith, many expect the team to make a splash in the free agency pool with a veteran who can provide solid support and good insurance should Smith continue to struggle.
Many believe that quarterback could be Michael Vick. In his Monday Morning Quarterback column, Peter King said that Vick could make sense as free agent pickup for the New York Jets.
King wrote:
I keep saying this, and few believe me: Vick’s a very good locker room guy now, a leader, and he’d be a good team guy whether or not he wins the starting job. I think if Vick had been more accurate in his past two years in Philly (.581,.546), offensive coordinator Norv Turner could have been sold on him with the Vikings; I know Vick was very interested in Minnesota. The team that makes the most sense is the Jets, because they have no idea if Geno Smith is their quarterback of the future.
The rumor placing Michael Vick on the New York Jets would make sense given that team executives have been reluctant to name Geno Smith the starter. It makes even more sense given the market for Mark Sanchez. Coach Rex Ryan has been noncommital on Sanchez’s status with the team, and reports have emerged that a number of teams could be interested in him.
While most of the New York Jets rumors have centered on free agency and the quarterback position, the team has already made one big move before free agency. On Monday the Jets cut cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who just a few weeks ago suited up in the Pro Bowl. The move allowed the Jets to avoid Cromartie’s $5 million roster bonus and freed up $9.5 million in cap space.
