The recent cyberattack against the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is said to have been caused by a foreign government and not a hacker group as originally believed.

The digital attack at the IMF led to a “large quantity” of data being downloaded from the organizations servers, information which included emails and various saved documents.

In a memo from June 8 which were obtained by Bloomberg it has been learned that “suspicious file transfers” were carried out one week prior and that employees were warned with the following messages:

“At this point, we have no reason to believe that any personal information was sought for fraud purposes.”

Initially IMF workers were warned of virus attacks on June 1 and then on June 9 they were warned of “phishing activities” on their company’s systems.

At this time the foreign government who chose to hack the network has not been revealed.
