House of Cards is the Emmy-winning Netflix original series starring Kevin Spacey as scheming US Congressman (and incoming vice president) Francis “Frank” Underwood, who revealingly declares in the trailer that in his opinion “democracy is so overrated.” Viewers of the popular show know that Underwood and his equally power-hungry spouse Claire Underwood played by Robin Wright have no intention of limiting their political aspirations to the vice presidency.
Netflix released all 13 episodes of the first season at once last year for its subscribers and will do the same for the series return on February 14. By releasing the entire season as a batch, Netflix gave viewers a unique opportunity to “marathon” a completely new series.
While the practice of binge viewing has gained in popularity, viewers are usually limited to marathoning programs that have already broadcast on traditional channels. As a bonus, Netflix has also reportedly added a director’s commentary audio track to the first season’s episodes.
In its basic premise and certain plot elements, House of Cards is a remake of the BBC miniseries of the same name (and its two follow-ups, To Play the King and The Final Cut ). The UK original starred the late Ian Richardson as devious British politician Francis Urquhart who manipulates his way to becoming the country’s prime minister.
Of the new House of Cards trailer, USA Today explains that “The trailer opens with Spacey’s character, Frank Underwood, getting sworn in as vice president as the investigation into Peter Russo’s death gets heated. The stakes are raised significantly in the 2-minute trailer teasing political conspiracy, corruption, knife fights, murder and a lot of dramatic yelling. Even Freddy, the friendly owner of Frank Underwood’s favorite BBQ joint, looks like he’s mad about something.”
