10 years ago Russell Brand broke the law in Japan and this week those actions came back to bite him in the butt. The British funny man traveled to the country to watch his wife Katy Perry perform when he was detained and told he would have to leave the country.

Perry broke the story, tweeting:

“So…my husband just got deported from Japan,” tweeted the singer. “I am so. sad. I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place #tokyodreamscrushed.”

Brand didn’t seem to distraught, poking fun at the situation:

“Planning escape from Japanese custody. It’s bloody hard to dig a tunnel with a chopstick.” Russell went on to joke, “Stockholm syndrome kicking in. Just asked my guard out for (vegetarian) sushi.”

Katy stayed behind to perform as scheduled.
