New Year’s Eve 2014 is around the corner and nothing is more exciting than watching the ball drop live in Times Square to bring in the spirit. This year, they are expecting the biggest crowd ever in New York City to watch the ball drop but if you are like the millions of people who want to see the ball drop live but cannot make it to Times Square we have the ball drop live streaming right here (see below).

This year the Times Square Alliance, the non profit which is in charge of the ball ceremony, has stepped it up a level by even offering an android and iphone app so you can watch the ball drop live from your smartphone (click here for the link to download the app).

This year there is a new green surprise for the ball. The power to light the ball will be collected throughout the day by six stationary bikes pedaled by volunteers .

People started celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square going all the way back to 1904, but it wasn’t until 1907 that the New Year’s Eve ball made it first appearance. The ball has come a long way since then. In 1907 the ball was an iron sphere covered with 100 lightbulbs. in 2014 the ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles to which are bolted to 672 LED modules. The Ball is illuminated by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs. Each LED module contains 48 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs – 12 red, 12 blue, 12 green, and 12 white for a total of 8,064 of each color. The ball begins its decent exactly one minute before midnight and can be seen from miles away.

The year more than 500,000 people are expected to wait hours in the cold to gather around the ball and bring in the new year partying in Times Square. Well, maybe party is a strong word as the extravaganza has been alcohol free for many years. While every year people sneak in beverages of the alcoholic variety, the chances of getting arrested with them are high and the idea of spending a night in jail instead of Times Square is just too much for most attendees.

Millions of people will be watching around the world to watch the New Year’s Eve 2014 live streaming ball drop in Times Square, will you be on of them?
