A 6-year-old boy was suspended from school after kissing a female classmate on the hand. In addition to the suspension, the Colorado boy’s record will reflect that he was disciplined for “sexual harassment.”
Hunter Yelton attends the Lincoln School of Science and Technology in the Fremont Re-1 School District. A representative with the school district said the sexual harassment policy is strict but necessary.
According to the district’s policy, sexual harassment is defined as “unwelcome sexual advances… or physical conduct of a sexual nature… when such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s educational performance or creating an intimating, hostile, or offensive educational environment”
Hunter’s mother, Jennifer Saunders, thinks the charge is unreasonably harsh and she wants it removed from her son’s record:
“This is taking it to an extreme… Now my son is asking questions… ‘what is sex mommy?’ That should not ever be said.. sex. Not in a sentence with a six-year-old.”
Hunter said he and the girl are friends and he has a crush on her. He said he and the girl were reading when he “leaned over and kissed her on the hand.” Although the girl was not upset about the kiss, several children reported it to the teacher.
As reported by KRDO News , this is the second time the six-year-old was suspended for kissing the same girl. Saunders said her son was previously suspended for kissing his friend on the cheek.
The school district representative said multiple incidents are considered sexual harassment . Therefore, the charge will remain on Hunter’s record. The school board believes the suspension and charge will encourage Hunter to modify his behavior.
Hunter admits he “did something wrong” and he is sorry for his behavior. Although he did apologize the six-year-old was suspended and the sexual harassment charge will stand.
