Fans of the immensely talented, late singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley may be pleased to know a film documenting the artist’s life is in development.

After he was caught in the wake of a passing boat, Buckley died of accidental drowning in 1996 at the age of 30. He’d released just one studio album- the highly acclaimed Grace. Much of his fame came in the years after his death, with the Leonard Cohen cover “Hallelujah” from Grace in particular becoming highly successful. The track even hit #2 on the Singles chart in the UK over Christmas in 2008.

Material of Buckley’s has been posthumously released, including the album Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk. The film chronicling Buckley’s brief life is set to start filming in the fall, but no actor has yet been pegged to portray the musician. (Has no one but me considered James Franco as a natural choice?)

Director Jake Scott of Welcome to the Rileys will helm the film. No expected release date has been suggested.
