Winona Ryder Confirms Talks For ‘Beetlejuice 2’

Last month, rumors began to resurface that there might be a Beetlejuice 2 on the horizon . This news would mean the exciting reunion of Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice and director Tim Burton. Almost immediately, people started to wonder if Winona Ryder would join the cast to reprise her role as Lydia Deetz.

Now, Ryder revealed that she’s involved in definite talks to reprise her role. During an interview with The Daily Beast , Winona remained a bit tight-lipped about her involvement in the Beetlejuice sequel, but she did hint that she’s in talks.

“I’m kind of sworn to secrecy, but it sounds like it might be happening.”

If Burton’s sequel can find the magic of the original 1988 film, we would be pretty surprised. Although a script is already written by Seth Grahame-Smith ( Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer ), the sequel would be left in Burton’s hands, which have failed to impress critics for years. One can argue that it’s been the same horse and pony show since his 1993 classic A Nightmare Before Christmas. His later works have been trashed by critics for being less than inspiring.

That said, we think Tim Burton needs a return to form with Beetlejuice 2 more than anyone else that’s involved with the production. So now that we know that Beetlejuice 2 is more than likely to happen, exactly what will it look like? For obvious reasons, the film will not pick up where we left the characters, considering Winona Ryder played a broody tween in the original.

Ryder explains what a Beetlejuice 2 sequel may look like:

“It’s not a remake. It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia [Deetz, her character] so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”

For Winona Ryder, this won’t be the first time she reunited with Tim Burton. Last year, she was directed by Burton in the music video for the Killers’ “Here With Me”, and she was also in Burton’s animated film Frankenweenie .

During Beetlejuice’s release, the film went on to gross $73.7 million and even nabbed an Academy Award for Best Makeup. Do you think Beetlejuice 2 will have the same fate?
