New Zealand and Mexico squared off last week, with Mexico thrashing the kiwis 5-1 in the first leg of the World Cup qualifying playoff. Mexico dominated every aspect of the game
Though Mexico came into the match heavily favored , there were still some nerve-wracking minutes leading up to the game, SBNation noted.
“The tension in Mexico was clear as soon as the teams walked onto the pitch and were greeted by only tepid cheering,” the report noted. “It was as if the crowd was holding its breath and that lasted for more than a half-hour as several looks at goal were turned away. Glen Moss made a nice save on Miguel Layun, while Maza Rodriguez hit the bar to keep El Tri from finding the net and the Azteca in panic.”
But, Paul Aguilar took advantage of a New Zealand mistake and scored into an empty net, giving Mexico a lead and sparking the blowout.
Mexico almost didn’t have the chance to advance World Cup playoff. The team needed help from the United States to advance in the competition, but now is eager to seize the chance.
“We want to win the game, not just qualify for the World Cup,” said Mexico coach Miguel Herrera through an interpreter on Tuesday. “We know that New Zealand need to come and attack us but we will play exactly the same way we did in Mexico .
“We want to win this game.”
The New Zealand vs. Mexico soccer match would have to get out of hand for El Tri to miss out on the World Cup. Mexico would have to lose 4-0 to be eliminated.
After today’s 5-1 home victory over New Zealand, Mexico is 99.2% to advance to the World Cup, according to the ESPN Soccer Power Index.

New Zealand isn’t looking to give up, however.
“It’s important for us to change that challenge…and put pressure back on the Mexican side to see how good they are,” said All Whites coach Ricki Herbert.
