A BART train caused a fatality today when 16-year-old Fausto Delgado was hit at the El Cerrito del Norte BART station in the early hours of the morning.
Delgado was a junior at El Cerrito High school. it is understood from initial reports that the boy committed suicide by throwing himself under the BART train, but these reports are yet to be confirmed.
Marin Trujillo, a spokesperson from the school the boy attended, said about the deceased: “He was very well-loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. We’re doing everything we can to make sure that the students get the help that they need, as well as the family.”
Psychologists were deployed to assist Delgado’s three siblings who attend the same school.
The incident caused the station to close fully, and a bus bridge was set up in meantime until the station eventually reopened at 8am, roughly three hours after the tragic incident.
The closure of the El Cerrito del Norte BART station caused extensive delays for passengers and commuters between the hours of 5:15 and 8:00 am.
As is unfortunately the case with several transportation systems, the Bay Area Mass Transit operation – usually referred to by the acronym BART – has had its share of accidents and fatalities.
Only last month there were two more BART fatalities when two rail workers were struck and killed by a BART train during a strike.
And in March of this year A BART train was involved in another fatality when a man has hit by a train at Glen Park Station.
It remains to be seen what the circumstances were which led to the BART fatality as authorities try to unravel the tragic death of Fausto Delgado.
