Derek Jeter was re-signed by the New York Yankees on Friday for $12 million. The deal Friday replaces a $9.5 million player option for the 39-year-old shortstop . If Jeter had exercised his option, he could have headed out for free agency. But after a disappointing 2013 , Jeter is happy to be a part of the only franchise he has ever played for. Jeter’s old deal with the Yankees included a $3 million buy out that is probably not included in the new contract.

ESPN broke the story via Twitter at 1:21 p.m. on Friday, November 1st.

THIS JUST IN: Derek Jeter has re-signed with the Yankees on a one-year, $12 million deal.

Jeter, who turns 40 in June, played in only 17 games last year, putting up a.190/.288/.254 line in 73 plate appearances. One of the things that the Yankees will have to decide is whether Jeter can continue to handle playing shortstop, or if he will need to move to a less taxing defensive position.
