Jackie Chan’s recent comments about natural disasters are stirring up controversy.
Chan, known for his martial arts movies, put his foot in his mouth while promoting his latest movie, Chinese Zodiac .
“I should not say this, but sometimes I really like to see a country having a disaster, or a big tsunami, or a big earthquake,” Jackie Chan said .
Come again? More context reveals Chan’s statement is malicious, just poorly phrased.
“After the big disaster, you see the whole world, everybody, flying in to help the country, which makes me happy.”
OK, Jackie Chan is pleading for greater international cooperation, not mayhem and destruction. Surely, Jackie there must be some other way to accomplish that—or some other way to phrase it? Of course, as C.S. Lewis says, “Out of all human events, it is tragedy alone that brings people out of their own petty desires and into awareness of other humans’ suffering.” It looks like Jackie Chan was just tapping into that.
Chan, who is perennially rumored to be dead , approaches the twilight of his career at the age of 59. Having previously retired from action movies, Chan appears to have reversed himself for films like Skiptrace and Police Story 2013 . Reflecting on the future of his career, Jackie Chan is contemplative about how long he can go.
“When I was 40-something, the media would ask me and then I said another five years, and then five years and five years until now,” Chan said in a story from MSN . “Six more months and I’m going to be 60,” he added , “and I [will] see how far I can go until my body tells me, ‘Stop.’”
Jackie Chan feels his future opportunities are being limited by his career to date and regrets being typecast.
“All we think about Jackie Chan: Chris Tucker, Rush Hour 1 , 2 , and 3 … always action-comedy, action-comedy,” Chan said. “I really hope someday in Hollywood, some producer or director will hire me only to do drama. I [would] really appreciate it.”
