A new Batman series named Eternal will debut in the coming spring. A new entry in the series will hit comic book store shelves every week to commemorate 2014, the 75 th anniversary of the Caped Crusader. Batman: Eternal showrunner Scott Snyder says that the weekly publication will feature an all-star line-up of story writers and artists.
Snyder promises Eternal will explore areas of Gotham City that are rarely given daylight. Without spoiling any details, he says there are plans to look at the world of the Batman in “bigger, grander and more game-changing way than ever before.” As USA Today reports, Snyder teases that the new weekly will take readers through some of the “biggest, craziest and most fun stuff” ever done for the Batman .
Artist Jason Fabok of Detective Comics will be the artist on Eternal . Snyder says writers will alternate between John Layman, James Tynion IV, Ray Fawkes, and Tim Seeley.
Because next year means 75 years of the Dark Knight, a large 96-page issue of the iconic Detective Comics , No. 27, will mark the anniversary. The new special is a nod to the original Detective Comics No. 27 which debuted the Batman for the very first time in 1939. As ABC News reports, it will be a modern-day retelling of Bruce Wayne and the Batman’s origins.
The issue will feature a number of stories featuring an incredible collection of guest writers, illustrators, and cover artists. The writers will include Gregg Hurwitz, Paul Dini, Frank Miller, Brad Meltzer, and Peter Tomasi. Neal Adams, Francesco Francavilla, and Dustin Nguyen will take up illustration duties. Among those contributing covers will be Chris Burnham, Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and more.
The special issue will be out January 8 and intends to point the series in a new direction. Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, who will be taking over Detective Comics in the spring, say they want to focus more on Batman’s investigation skills and take him back “closer to his roots.”
