Andie MacDowell Does Not Want To Be Called A Cougar, ‘It’s Demeaning’

Andie MacDowell doesn’t mind being called many things, but cougar is not one of them.

According to a report by People magazine, the Magic Mike XXL actress plays a rough, and sometimes vulgar, woman on the prowl, especially for the troupe of hot, abs-tastic group of traveling exotic dancers led by Channing Tatum in the film.

Although some might argue that cougar is the perfect term for the character Andie McDowell plays, she will have none of it.

The ever-beautiful, 57-year-old actress told the magazine that the term cougar is just too raunchy and demeaning.

“I find it offensive. There’s this notion that as men get older they become more handsome, so therefore they can have younger women, but there is no reality to that obviously – it’s just another way to disempower women.”

Andie MacDowell echoed that sentiment in an interview with the Guardian .

“I think it’s unfair that we don’t have a male equivalent. There was a cougar line; I took it out. I didn’t wanna say it. I have a problem with the word. I just think it’s unnecessary. It’s demeaning. I think the idea that men get more handsome and sexier as they get older is a fallacy. There’s no difference. We’re the same. It was a way to empower men and disempower women. And that’s changing, because if I wanna date someone that’s 20 years younger than me, I can do that now.”

Preach it, Andie!

MacDowell is anything but disempowered. She has a string of film roles under her belt that is very impressive. From St. Elmo’s Fire and Four Weddings and A Funeral to Sex, Lies and Videotapes and Footloose , she has long graced the big screen, as well as a slew of Lifetime movies.

However, Magic Mike XXL , is quite the departure from the roles she generally undertakes.

Andie is also well-known as the face of L’Oréal. Back in the day, she fought to continue to be the face of the mega-cosmetic company even when they deemed her too old to front the youth-oriented industry.

Do you think Andie MacDowell is right about the term cougar?
