After three seasons, Fox has cancelled the Kevin Bacon-starring thriller, The Following .
According to TVLine , the reason behind Fox pulling the plug on The Following is because of its decreasing ratings. The series premiered strongly in 2013 with more than 10 million watching the pilot episode, and an average 8 million tuning in for the rest of the season. But after its freshman run, The Following began losing viewership. The third season attracted 4.8 million in the beginning, but the most recent episodes had trouble getting to the 3 million mark in viewership.
While The Following will not be returning for another season, Fox will air the remaining episodes, with a two-hour series finale scheduled for May 18. Deadline reports that there’s a possibility that the series could be picked up by Hulu , since it is streaming the previous seasons, but that is being considered a “long shot” at this point.
Upon news that Fox has cancelled The Following , the show’s cast and crew members took to Twitter to thank them for tuning in.

Alexi Hawley, who serves as writer and executive producer for The Following , promised that the final episodes would not disappoint.

The Following is not the only series to be cancelled by Fox this year. As previously reported by the Inquisitr , the network also cancelled two of its freshman series, Backstrom and Red Band Society . Fox also pulled the plug on The Mindy Project after three seasons. However, there are reports that the Mindy Kaling-led comedy could be picked up by Hulu.
