In 1987 Michael Douglas gave a famous speech about greed as the character Gordon Gekko in the movie “Wall Street.” But Douglas doesn’t agree with his “Wall Street” character. In a new PSA for the FBI to to help stop insider trading the iconic actor says that “Greed is not good.”
The FBI didn’t choose Douglas as their spokesperson on accident. The PSA opens up with a clip from the movie “Wall Street” and Douglas starts his speech about insider trading by saying that the movie was fiction and that his character was wrong.
Christine Moorman, T. Austin Finch senior professor of business administration at Duke University‘s Fuqua School of Business, told Forbes :
“(The FBI’s) choice to use Michael Douglas in referencing this mythical character Gordon Gekko is a very credible way to address the topic. I expect it to be very effective, actually.
Tim Calkins, clinical professor of marketing at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business, added:
“The spot is going to attract a lot of attention for the FBI, and it’s going to get people thinking about the FBI if they see something that’s not quite right. If their goal is to generate leads and to get people to come forward, this is going to be very effective for them.”
