Darrelle Revis has signed with the New England Patriots in a one-year, $12 million deal.
Revis was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier in the day after he refused to take a pay cut and the team was unable to find a trade partner. The Patriots were seen as a likely landing spot, especially given the fact that New England lost its best member of the secondary when Aqib Talib left in free agency.
It turned out that Darrelle Revis was only on the market for a few hours before the Patriots snatched him up. The move will help the Patriots shore up their defense, which had been dealt a blow with Talib’s departure to Denver.
The move also kept Revis from returning to the New York Jets, the Patriots in-division opponent that had been seen as a possible landing point for the former All-Pro cornerback.
ESPN reported the deal on Wednesday evening, but the deal is not official yet. Revis still needs to pass his physical before he signs the deal.
Revis had went to the Buccaneers in a trade with the Jets, but he managed only two interceptions to go along with 50 tackles. The Buccaneers needed to either trade or cut Revis before 4 pm on Wednesday or else the fourth-round pick they owed to the Jets in the second year of the trade would have been upgraded to a third-round pick.
But the Buccaneers could not find a partner to trade Darrelle Revis to, leading to his being cut.
