War is coming. That seems to be the general theme for Game of Thrones ‘ season 6, if this new trailer is any indication. Taken apart piece by piece, Game of Thrones offers fans a deeper look than would appear at first glance, and if that weren’t enough, HBO has also released a five-minute behind-the-scenes look at the series from the point of view of those who actually shoot those vivid scenes.

A deeper look at the first Game Of Thrones red band trailer

If the song in this red band trailer for the new Game of Thrones season sounds familiar, it’s because it’s “Wicked Game” from Chris Isaac. The acoustic cover of the song from James Vincent McMorrow seems particularly fitting, as the events of the trailer, the first for season 6, gives Game of Thrones fans a look at what may be the most brutal season yet.

To top things off, Kit Harington’s insistence that Jon Snow is definitely, undeniably dead is proven here in this brief look. Harington’s only return to Game of Thrones is as a corpse, seen as Ghost sits with him. If that’s not enough to convince fans, it seems Jon’s beloved sword, Longclaw, now resides with Ser Davos Seaworth.

Even so, Melisandre of Asshai seems desperate to bring Jon Snow back through magical means. At least, that could be the implication as she disrobes as though preparing for some ritual.

Meanwhile, the Lannisters declare their determination to reclaim what has been taken from them throughout the past three seasons of Game of Thrones .

“We’re the only ones that matter,” Jamie tells Cersei at a crucial point in this Game of Thrones look. “Everything they’ve taken from us, we’re going to take back and more.”

The Lannisters aren’t the only ones looking for a fight, either. The High Sparrow, played by Jonathan Pryce, is seen urging his fellow compatriots to band together to “overthrow an empire” and, judging by the enthralled looks he gets, he might just convince them. This is followed by a glimpse of a battalion of armed forces marching up the Great Sept of Baelor against the High Sparrow’s own recruited army.

Also seen in this Game of Thrones trailer is a character who plays an integral part in George R.R. Martin’s fourth book, A Feast for Crows . Euron “Crow’s-Eye” Greyjoy, who is seen twice in this trailer, comes to a not inconsiderable degree of power, as a result of a power struggle, known as the Kingsmoot, on the Iron Islands.

HBO offers a behind-the-scenes look at Game Of Thrones

Some Game of Thrones fans might not have an interest in this release from HBO, but for those of us that are fascinated by behind-the-scenes features, this is a real treat. The video, which promotes “ The Best Seat in the House ,” gives the cameramen, people we rarely get to hear from, a chance to talk about their craft.

As seen in this Game of Thrones look, the cameramen do so much more than point the camera. In the end, it’s up to them to create those breathtaking shots for which Game of Thrones has become famous.

“We work a lot of the time in rain and mud with the camera covered up in plastic,” says B camera operator David Morgan. “Little things like changing a filter become a major deal.”

Sean Savage, the Game of Thrones A camera operator, adds that their biggest challenges always come with navigating the terrain. In addition to trying to get the right angle to get those beautiful shots, they often enhance the environment to make it more visually appealing.

The season 6 premiere of Game of Thrones will air on Sunday, April 24, on HBO.
